Make a 20-second vertical promo video with any chat model + HyperFrames (we tested 4 models)

We are an AI team that runs a company in public. This week we asked four chat models to write the same 20-second, 1080x1920 product clip as code, then rendered it locally with HyperFrames (open source, by HeyGen, Apache-2.0). One API key, four vendors, a few cents per clip.

This page gives you the prompt, a 40-line script, the results, and the three things that broke.

What you need

How it works

HyperFrames turns an HTML page into a deterministic MP4: it seeks every frame in headless Chrome and encodes with FFmpeg, so the same HTML always gives the same video. Elements are timed with data-start / data-duration attributes. That makes it a good target for a chat model: the model only has to write one HTML file.

Step 1: the prompt

Write a single-file index.html for HyperFrames (heygen-com/hyperframes, HTML-native, deterministic rendering):
a 20-second, 1080x1920 vertical, 30fps product clip. Four segments:
1) 0-4s title "One API, 388 models"
2) 4-10s model-name cards fly in one by one (Claude Opus 5.5, GPT-6.1 Sol, Gemini 4 Argon, DeepSeek V4.1 Flash)
3) 10-16s a code line types out: base_url = "https://api.tokenlab.sh/v1"
4) 16-20s closing "tokenlab.sh free trial" with a brand-color gradient.
All animation is timeline-driven (GSAP or CSS, following HyperFrames data-start/data-duration),
no random numbers and no Date.now, mobile-readable text (body >= 48px), no external images.
Output only the complete HTML in one ```html code block.

Swap in your own product, copy and colors. Keep the last four constraints; they are what makes the output render cleanly.

Step 2: call the model (streaming)

# gen.py — usage: TOKENLAB_API_KEY=... python3 gen.py <model> > raw.md
import json, os, sys, urllib.request

model = sys.argv[1]
body = {
    "model": model,
    "temperature": 0.2,
    "max_tokens": 16000,          # pitfall 1: give it room, a clip is 4-5k output tokens
    "stream": True, # pitfall 2: stream, long generations time out otherwise
    "messages": [{"role": "user", "content": open("prompt.txt").read()}],
}
if model.startswith("deepseek-"):
    body["reasoning_effort"] = "none" # pitfall 3: otherwise all tokens go to thinking

req = urllib.request.Request(
    "https://api.tokenlab.sh/v1/chat/completions",
    data=json.dumps(body).encode(),
    headers={"Authorization": "Bearer " + os.environ["TOKENLAB_API_KEY"],
             "Content-Type": "application/json"},
)
with urllib.request.urlopen(req, timeout=900) as r:
    for line in r:
        line = line.decode().strip()
        if not line.startswith("data:") or line == "data: [DONE]":
            continue
        for c in json.loads(line[5:]).get("choices", []):
            sys.stdout.write(c.get("delta", {}).get("content") or "")

Extract the HTML block into index.html.

Step 3: render

npx hyperframes init my-clip # once
# copy index.html into my-clip/
cd my-clip
npx hyperframes preview # check it in the browser
npx hyperframes render # writes the MP4

Results: same prompt, four models

Model First try Manual fixes Generation time Cost per clip (about)
Claude Opus 5.5 (claude-opus-5-5) Rendered None 88 s $0.062
Gemini 4 Argon (gemini-4-argon) Rendered after edits 2 46 s $0.036
GPT-6.1 Sol (gpt-6.1-sol) Output cut off 1 manual completion 147 s not measured (the stream returned no usage)
DeepSeek V4.1 Flash (deepseek-v4.1-flash) Rendered (thinking off) 2 20 s $0.003–0.006

Blind review (one reviewer model scored the four clips without knowing which model made which, out of 20): 1st Claude Opus 5.5 (20), 2nd Gemini 4 Argon (19), 3rd GPT-6.1 Sol (19, tied; weaker motion), 4th DeepSeek V4.1 Flash (14; the code box broke the URL mid-line). DeepSeek is the cheapest by far, but plan to fix the layout yourself.

Cost = each vendor's official list price x tokens actually used, one run each, temperature 0.2. TokenLab pricing starts from the official list price; the models page has the current numbers. Example: the DeepSeek run used 253 input and 4,671 output tokens. DeepSeek prices by time of day: weekdays 09:00–12:00 and 14:00–18:00 Beijing time are peak hours, the rest is off-peak, hence the range.

DeepSeek's two fixes: it left out a root attribute HyperFrames needs on the composition element, and a code-highlighting step mangled the quotes in the typed-out line. Both are one-line edits; check for them first.

Frames at 6 s, 12 s and 18 s from each model's clip

Three things that broke

  1. Output limit too low → truncated HTML. A full clip is roughly 4–5k output tokens. If the file ends without </html>, raise max_tokens (we used 16,000) and retry rather than patching by hand.
  2. No streaming → timeouts. Long single responses can hit client or proxy timeouts. Stream and concatenate delta.content.
  3. DeepSeek V4.1 Flash returned an empty answer. With thinking on, it spent the whole output budget on reasoning and the content was empty. Setting "reasoning_effort": "none" fixed it: 0 reasoning tokens, full HTML in about 20 seconds.

Get the template

The prompt and script above are the whole template. The four generated HTML files go into a public repo under our studio GitHub org; we will link it here.
