TOKENLAB_MCP_TOOL_PROFILE picks the tool set: catalog (6 lookup tools), core (32 tools), or full (89 tools).
TOKENLAB_API_KEY is needed for every profile except catalog. Commands read it from your shell, so export it first and never paste the key into a prompt.

Do I need an API key?

Not for the catalog profile: model search, prices, and comparisons work without one. The core and full profiles need TOKENLAB_API_KEY in the server environment for chat, media, files, and tasks.

Which profile should I pick?

Start with catalog to choose models. Use core, the default, when the agent should create content. Use full only when you need batches, the Responses API, world generation, or library assets.

What does it cost?

The MCP server is free and open source. Tool calls that run a model are billed at the normal TokenLab price for that request.

Do I need Skills too?

No. MCP works alone. Skills add the method for a result, such as which model to pick and how to check the output, and they use these tools when both are installed.
