About Stability AI Control Sketch

Control Sketch is Stability AI's sketch-to-image service in its Control group of image tools. You supply a drawing and a text prompt, and it returns a finished image that follows the lines of the drawing. It suits designers who already know the layout they want. Unlike Control Structure, which reads the arrangement of a real image, this one is built around rough hand-drawn input.

Where it works well

  • It keeps the composition you drew, so the layout decision stays with you rather than the model.
  • Rough line work is enough input; the prompt supplies material, lighting, and colour.
  • Works as an image-to-image step, so one sketch can be rendered several times with different prompts.

When to choose another model

  • It cannot invent a layout, so a weak or ambiguous sketch gives a weak result.
  • For editing a region of an existing photo, Stability Inpaint is the better fit.

Use cases

  • Concept art from thumbnails

Turn a quick pencil thumbnail of a character or scene into a painted concept, then re-run the same sketch with other prompts to compare moods.

  • Product ideation

Sketch a bottle, chair, or gadget outline and render it as a studio-lit product shot before any 3D modelling begins.

  • Storyboard frames

Convert rough panel drawings into consistent-looking frames by reusing the same style wording in each prompt.

  • Interior layout previews

Draw walls, windows, and furniture blocks and ask for a finished room render in a stated style.

Prompt examples

Render this pencil sketch of a lighthouse on a cliff as an oil painting at dusk, warm window light, stormy sky.

Turn my line drawing of a sneaker into a clean studio product photo on a pale grey background.

Use this floor-plan doodle as the layout for a bright Scandinavian living room, wide-angle view.

FAQ

What does Stability Control Sketch do?

It takes a drawing plus a text prompt and produces a developed image that stays true to the drawn lines. The sketch fixes composition; the prompt decides texture, lighting, and style.

What input does it need?

An input image, normally a sketch or line drawing, and a text prompt describing the result. The drawing sets the composition, so the clearer and more deliberate its lines are, the closer the finished image will follow your intent.

How is it different from Control Structure?

Sketch is designed around hand-drawn or line-based input and treats it as a guide to refine. Control Structure keeps the arrangement of shapes in an existing image, such as a photo, while changing its appearance.

Can it edit part of a picture?

No. It generates a new image from the whole sketch. To change one masked region of an existing image and leave the rest alone, use Stability Inpaint.

Does it return text or only images?

It returns an image. This service takes image input and a prompt and produces image output only, so it has no chat or text-generation interface; use a language model for any written output you need alongside it.

How much does Stability AI Control Sketch cost?

On TokenLab, Stability AI Control Sketch costs $0.05 per image. The pricing table above shows the full breakdown. Rates depend on the billing unit, specification, and usage. Compare matching conditions in the model's detailed pricing; a single rate does not determine the total cost.

Which endpoint should Stability AI Control Sketch use?
